I tried out the
League of Legends today. It's pretty
popular action Real-Time Strategy game. Besides that it is free. Although I don't prefer to call such games "free", because there is always a content which you can pay and gives you advantage vs. those who didn't purchase additional content.
I must mention that purchasing League of Legends additional stuffs, doesn't really give you advantage, maybe runes give big advantage - expert player should confirm me that.
For example purchasing a character = champion, you get it instantly, if you pay for it. But, if you play game you'll earn those champions while playing. Only disadvantage as new player is, that you gotta play game and give time into it. So, it's all in time by League of Legends. Giving time into game and earning all the champions should be fun.
I didn't play long enough to totally confirm if that additional content really doesn't give you long term advantage. I'll figure that out once I play more or if some expert will leave a comment and explain me whole system.
Comparing the whole system to Quake Live, I find League of Legends's one better. Because you don't notice all the commercials 10 times before you can play and as soon as you leave server. Besides that, even if purchase Quake Live premium/pro subscription, you still get commercials -.-
However, back to League of Legends, I'd recommend it to anyone, it's fun to play it with friends, I am naturaly not good in RTS games, so if you wanna smash someone or get smashed with me in co-op, feel free to add me in your friend list, my nickname is
TroubleGirl.
Note: regarding the purchase option in so called "free" games, I understand they gotta earn money for providing servers, but they better figure something else out, something what doesn't include disadvantage to group of players who decide to not purchase the additional content.
